App Overview
The Govee app is the central hub for controlling all Govee smart lighting products, including LED strips, bulbs, floor lamps, and neon signs. As of 2026, the app supports over 200 device models and offers features like scene customization, voice control, and automation routines.
The app is available for both iOS and Android, with minimum requirements of iOS 13+/Android 8.0+. The latest version (5.6.1) includes improved Bluetooth mesh networking for up to 20 devices simultaneously.
Note: Some advanced features like DIY mode and music sync require firmware version 2.0 or higher on supported devices. Check your device settings in the app to verify compatibility.
Getting Started
1. Installation & Account Setup
- Download the app: Search for "Govee Home" in your app store (not "Govee" which is their older app). The correct app has a blue icon with a white house silhouette.
- Create an account: Use your email or sign in with Apple/Google for faster setup. The app doesn't require phone verification in most regions.
- Location permissions: Enable location services when prompted for initial device discovery. The app uses Bluetooth proximity rather than GPS for most operations.
2. App Navigation
The Govee app uses a bottom navigation bar with five main sections:
- Home: Device management and scene control
- Scenes: Pre-built lighting presets and custom scenes
- Effects: Dynamic animations and music sync
- Profile: Account settings and device firmware updates
Pro tip: Swipe left/right on the Home screen to switch between different device groups. Useful for separating bedroom, living room, and kitchen lights in larger homes.
Device Setup
1. Bluetooth vs Wi-Fi Devices
| Device Type | Connection Method | Max Devices | Offline Operation |
|---|---|---|---|
| H61XX series LED strips | Bluetooth mesh | 20 | Yes (30 minutes) |
| H60XX bulbs | Wi-Fi 2.4GHz | Unlimited | Yes |
| M1 series floor lamps | Dual-mode (Wi-Fi/Bluetooth) | 5 | Yes |
| Neon signs | Bluetooth | 3 | No |
2. Step-by-Step Setup Process
For Bluetooth Devices (H61XX strips, neon signs):
- Power on your device and wait 30 seconds for the LED indicator to flash blue
- Open the Govee app and tap "Add Device" > "Bluetooth"
- Select your device model from the list (check the back of the device for model number)
- Hold the power button on your device for 5 seconds until the indicator flashes rapidly
- Follow the in-app pairing prompts. The app will test connectivity by changing colors
- Name your device and assign it to a room
For Wi-Fi Devices (H60XX bulbs, M1 lamps):
- Ensure your phone is connected to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (5GHz isn't supported)
- Power on your device and wait for the Wi-Fi indicator to flash
- In the app, tap "Add Device" > "Wi-Fi" and select your device model
- Enter your Wi-Fi credentials when prompted. The app will send them to the device
- Wait for the device to reconnect (indicator will turn solid)
- Name your device and assign it to a room
Troubleshooting: If devices don't appear in the app, try:
- Restarting your phone's Bluetooth/Wi-Fi
- Updating device firmware via the Profile section
- Resetting the device (hold power button for 10 seconds)
- Moving closer to the device during initial pairing
Scenes & Effects
1. Pre-Built Scenes
The app includes 50+ pre-configured scenes divided into categories:
- Relax: Warm whites (2700K-3000K) at 30% brightness for reading
- Energize: Cool whites (5000K-6500K) at 100% brightness for focus
- Party: RGB cycles with 1-second transitions between colors
- Sleep: Gradual dimming to 10% over 30 minutes
- TV Time: Deep reds (190-200nm) at 20% brightness to reduce eye strain
2. Custom Scenes
Create custom scenes with specific color temperatures and brightness levels:
- Tap "Scenes" > "Create Scene"
- Select your devices (up to 5 for sync)
- Adjust color temperature using the slider (1000K-10000K)
- Set brightness (1%-100%)
- Save with a name like "Bedroom Relax Mode"
- Set as a favorite for quick access in the Home tab
3. Timer & Automation
Schedule scenes to activate automatically:
- Daily timer: Repeat scenes at specific times (e.g., 6:30 AM "Wake Up" scene)
- Sunset mode: Automatically activates warm tones 30 minutes before sunset
- Geofencing: Turns lights on/off based on phone location
- Sunrise simulation: Gradual brightening over 30 minutes
Music Sync
1. Setup Requirements
- Android 9+ or iOS 14+ with microphone permissions enabled
- Devices must support music sync (H61XX strips, M1 lamps, H61XX bulbs)
- Minimum volume threshold of 60% for accurate detection
- No Bluetooth headphones during sync sessions
2. Music Modes
| Mode | Description | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Beat Mode | Flashes lights to bass drops and high notes | EDM, hip-hop, video games |
| Energy Mode | Smooth color transitions matching tempo | Pop, rock, ambient |
| Spectrogram | Visualizes entire frequency range with color gradients | Audio analysis, parties |
| Classic Mode | Simple on/off to beat detection | All music genres |
Pro tip: For best results, place your phone near the sound source (speakers) rather than the lights. The app processes audio through your phone's microphone, not device microphones.
DIY Mode
1. What You Can Customize
DIY mode lets you create custom color sequences with:
- Up to 16 color segments per sequence
- Segment durations from 0.1 to 10 seconds
- Smooth or instant transitions between colors
- Save up to 5 custom DIY sequences
- Adjustable brightness for the entire sequence
2. Creating a DIY Sequence
- Tap "Effects" > "DIY" > "Create New"
- Set sequence duration (max 2 minutes)
- Add color segments by tapping the timeline. Each tap creates a new segment
- Adjust color and duration for each segment
- Preview the sequence before saving
- Name your sequence (e.g., "Cinematic Blue Pulse")
3. Advanced Techniques
- Gradient effects: Create smooth transitions by setting segment durations to 0.5-1 seconds
- Pulsing lights: Alternate between two similar colors with 1-second segments
- Scene transitions: Build sequences that mimic movie lighting (e.g., red emergency lights)
- Sync groups: Combine multiple devices in DIY mode for coordinated effects across rooms
